Succesful OI: A little like being in love helps

Since I went back to school, I have received (and saved) many questions about ‘going back to college’. One of them is ‘why this subject’. Issues like ‘technology diffusion’, ‘boundary of the firm’ and ‘the innovation of innovation’ have always interested me. I was sure I read a HBR contribution on Open Innovation once (must have been 2006), but I cannot find that particular one.

I have tried to reconstruct when the interest in OI exactly started. I do recall a “Night of innovation” organized by The Bridge on September 27th, 2007 (which was somewhat disappointing btw), where I met with a Logica consultant. We had a conversation about Open Innovation, he was already in progress with a publication. I later received the survey, titled “The Road to successful innovation, A little like being in love”.  (from february 14, 2008, mind the date).

” Such cooperation requires more than a positive business case, it asks for inspiration, for a spark. This led one of our interviewees to state that, in order to be successful, organizations need to be ‘a little in love’ – an analogy proving useful in formulating some of our findings.”  An interesting read.
