Brands rule the world?
Just wondering if brands are ruling our world today. I was told that if you want to sign up for Hyves, the Dutch Facebook equivalent, you’re asked what brands you prefer. Not sure if I want to be part of that culture.
The amount of attention the update of the ESRI logo received (yes, related to branding) did surprise me a bit. Mostly since we have been using the Esri (ez-ree) pronunciation since I remember, all over across Europe. International consistence makes a lot of sense. And the new logo has a freshness that is appealing (to me). I guess ‘rumour around the brand’ is mostly good. It shows people care…
What’s a brand anyway? To me a sum of all associations with one organization, maybe symbolized by a logo, but build (and torn down) by interactions with real people (note the action word). You can’t plan a brand, maybe steer it a bit in the right direction. And it also means that all interested own a bit of it as well. I recall reading we are exposed to more than 2,000 brands a day. Most of them we are probably not aware off.
So on a whim of openness, here are few brands which invaded our privacy: BMW (bikes), National Geographic, Discovery Channel (Travel, Food), Grolsch, Coca Cola, Nike, Hershey, Aunt Jemima, Yello, … There are a few brands that will never, ever enter our domain again, but I tend to keeps things on the positive side (here).
So how come this line of thought? I was building a garden shed and went to the local DIY. Said my youngest: this is the one from the commercial, that sounds like a funeral. Not that I care where to get building materials, but it shows you can comfortable leave killing a brand up to its captain. Who’s ruling your world? Stuff you think about while building a garden shed….
